Grant Slater began playing keyboards at age 7. Initially it was the accordion but by the age of 9 he was playing the organ along with his father who was a professional organist. Grant was more or less the opening act for his dad while they toured throughout Ontario and Quebec performing at various Hammond Organ Clubs. Grant was a member of several bands based out of Hamilton. (The Looking Glass, The Majority and The Canadian Conspiracy).

 

        Shortly after moving to Toronto, Grant became involved in the R&B scene with such great singers as Rita Chiarelli and Shawne Jackson (“Just As Bad As You”). This led to regular music sessions with such talented musicians as Domenic Troiano (Mandala, Bush, The Guess Who), Prakash John (Alice Cooper, Lou Reed) and Stacy Heydon (David Bowie, Iggy Pop).

       

        Grant went on to play with virtuoso violinist Lenny Solomon in the Lenny Solomon Band, (Myles & Lenny, Bowfire).  This led to numerous recording sessions and jingles with the likes of Hagood Hardy, Micky Erbe and Stacy Heydon (David Bowie’s guitarist). Grant helped form the band “The Royals”, fronted by Bobby Dupont (Sweet Blindness) and George Olliver (The Mandala). It was a high energy R&B show that worked throughout Ontario and Quebec, including a 3 month tour of Europe. The Royals recorded one album that was produced by Domenic Troiano.

 

        Following The Royals, Grant did short stints with Long John Baldry and Walter Zwol, including 3 albums combined and worked with celebrated record producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan).

Grant also recorded and co-wrote the children’s album The Rugrats which was presented a Juno award.

 

        In the 1980’s Grant began a lengthy club date at the Club Bluenote in Toronto with George Olliver. Every week the band accompanied a different guest singer. Sam & Dave, Martha Reeves, Etta James, Aubrey Mann, Liberty Silver, Ben E. King and Mary Wells were just a few of them. Even Stevie Wonder came in one night unannounced and sang with the band. “I’ll never forget that night”.

 

        Since the late 80’s, Grant has been the musical director and band leader of touring shows for popular children’s entertainers, Sharon Lois & Bram. He has toured extensively throughout Canada and the United States, including Hawaii, performing at most major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles and Massey Hall. Grant also works with other talented children’s entertainers, Juno award winner Jack Grunsky and Juno nominee Lenny Graf .

        In 1999 Grant recorded his first CD, co-written with Danny Colomby, titled “Blue Sapphire”.

           

        In 2001 Grant performed for the IOC (International Olympic Committee), during Toronto’s bid for the 2008 games with Sony recording artist Aselin Debison from Cape Breton Island.

 

        During 2004 Grant performed in the Toronto orchestra as an alternate for keyboard two, for the Tony award winning Broadway musical, Hairspray”.

                 

        Throughout the 90’s to present Grant has been the musical director for Aubrey Mann’s Reflections and Evening at the Apollo”. This is a slick high energy Motown show that performs concerts and corporate shows throughout Ontario and completed a successful Canadian tour in 2005 for BMO Financial Group.

           

        Grant has accompanied Alfie Zappacosta, Sherisse Laurence (Circus TV series) and Carol Welsman and presently works with Colm Wilkinson (Phantom of the Opera), playing 2nd keyboard. Grant also performed 2 shows at the London & Windsor Blues Festivals with David Clayton-Thomas, (Blood, Sweat & Tears) during the summer, 2006. He also works regularly with  Lorraine Lawson, Laura Lynn, gospel singer Kelita and comedian/entertainer Mike Carbone. Mike brought Grant and his band to Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas in 2006 to entertain managers from TD Bank Canada Trust.

 

During the spring of 2007 Grant played keyboards with musical director and pianist Steve Hunter for the successful musical production of the "Rocky Horror Show" at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.

           

        In the past 8 years Grant has been concentrating on his own band, The Grant Slater Band”. They are a multi-talented group of musicians that provide a diverse repertoire of music for all ages.

       

        Whether a client desires solo piano, a small jazz ensemble or a full 6 to 8 piece dance band, with their vast musical backgrounds, Grant and his fellow band members will provide a very memorable evening, whatever the occasion.
